🌤️ IMD’s 150th Anniversary: Vision 2047 Sets Bold Goals for Weather & Disaster Readiness

On its 150th Foundation Day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) unveiled an ambitious blueprint — Vision 2047 — to transform India into a “weather-ready and climate-smart” nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the occasion with the launch of Mission Mausam and a commitment to cutting-edge forecasting, localised disaster warnings, and zero fatalities from extreme weather events by 2047.

🎯 Forecast Accuracy Goals

India’s Vision 2047 sets bold targets for the accuracy of weather forecasts:

Time PeriodForecast Accuracy Target
3 Days💯 100%
5 Days✅ 90%
7 Days📈 80%
10 Days🔍 70%

These goals apply to all severe weather events, with predictions to be made down to block and panchayat levels. The goal is to ensure early, reliable alerts for every village and household.

🛰️ Severe Weather Detection & Preparedness

By 2047, the IMD envisions real-time weather detection and alerts at the village level, using:

  • 🌐 Remote-sensing systems
  • 📡 Doppler radars & satellites
  • 🧠 AI & Machine Learning
  • 🧭 Geospatial tools

These advancements aim to make India disaster-resilient, protecting both lives and property with impact-based forecasts and risk-sensitive warnings.

🛡️ Disaster Management Vision: Zero Fatalities

  • 🚨 Proactive alerts to disaster managers and the public
  • 🧱 Early evacuation and damage mitigation
  • 🔄 Integration with local disaster relief agencies

⚠️ By 2047, India aims to record zero deaths due to severe weather events — a milestone in global disaster safety.

🇮🇳 Integrating Climate with National Goals

IMD’s Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra highlighted the role of weather data in national development. Vision 2047 aligns climate information with India’s broader goals of:

  • 🌾 Agricultural productivity
  • 🚧 Infrastructure safety
  • 🏥 Health risk monitoring
  • 🛠️ Climate-resilient development

🌦️ Mission Mausam: A Forecasting Revolution

Launched alongside the Vision document, Mission Mausam aims to:

  • 🌩️ Expand observation networks
  • 🤖 Adopt advanced forecasting tools
  • 📊 Apply AI/ML for real-time modelling
  • 📡 Use big data for micro-forecasts

This mission will redefine how weather data is captured, interpreted, and delivered across India.

🎉 150 Years of IMD: Commemorations

  • 💰 Special coin and postage stamp released
  • 🇮🇳 IMD tableau at Republic Day Parade
  • 🏛️ Public exhibitions showcasing 150 years of weather science

📅 Founded in the 1860s following major climate disasters, the IMD is now stepping boldly into the future.

🌐 Future Outlook: India as a Global Forecasting Leader

Over the next two decades, the IMD plans to:

  • ⚙️ Close current technology gaps
  • 🔭 Expand observational infrastructure
  • 🌱 Strengthen climate-smart agriculture
  • 🏙️ Guide smart cities with hyperlocal weather data
  • 🌍 Lead regional collaborations in meteorology

🌤️ With Vision 2047, India is not just forecasting the weather — it’s forecasting a safer, smarter, and climate-resilient future.
