National Health Mission Extended for 5 More Years: A Big Leap for India’s Public Health

The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the National Health Mission (NHM) for another five years. Since its inception, NHM has emerged as a key force in addressing India’s health challenges, and its progress from 2021 to 2024 reflects a significant transformation in public health delivery across the country.


🔑 Key Achievements in Human Resources

  • In FY 2021-22, NHM added 2.69 lakh healthcare workers (including doctors and nurses).
  • This rose to 4.21 lakh in 2022-23 and 5.23 lakh in 2023-24.
  • Community Health Officers also saw a boost with 1.29 lakh and 1.38 lakh added in the last two years.

👩‍⚕️ Maternal and Child Health Progress

  • 83% reduction in maternal mortality since 1990 — surpassing the global average of 45%.
  • Under-5 Mortality Rate dropped from 45 to 32 (2014–2020).
  • Infant Mortality Rate fell from 39 to 28 in the same period.
    📌 These strides align with India’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

🦠 Infectious Disease Control

  • Tuberculosis incidence dropped from 237 to 195 per 1,00,000 population (2015–2023).
  • Malaria saw a 13.28% decline in 2021 compared to 2020.
  • Kala-azar elimination achieved in all endemic blocks — 100% success! ✅

💉 Vaccination Milestones

  • Under Intensified Mission Indradhanush 5.0, 34.77 crore children vaccinated against measles-rubella — 97.98% coverage.
  • Over 220 crore COVID-19 doses administered (Jan 2021 – Mar 2024) via NHM’s strong network.

🛡️ Specialized Health Campaigns

  • 1.56 lakh TB patients adopted under PM TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
  • 2.61 crore tribals screened under Sickle Cell Anemia Mission — elimination goal set for 2047.
  • 62.35 lakh dialysis sessions delivered through PM National Dialysis Programme.

🚭 Addressing Broader Public Health Concerns

  • 17.3% decline in tobacco usage over the last decade.
  • Launch of National Action Plan for Snakebite Envenoming in FY 2022–23 to prevent and manage snakebites.

💻 Digital Health Integration

  • U-WIN Platform launched in Jan 2023 for tracking vaccinations in real time.
  • Expanded to 65 districts by FY 2023–24, ensuring timely immunisation for women and children.
