Indore and Udaipur Become India’s First Ramsar-Accredited Wetland Cities

🌍 Milestone for Urban Conservation

India marked a historic achievement as Indore and Udaipur became the first Indian cities to receive Wetland City Accreditation under the Ramsar Convention. The announcement, made just ahead of World Wetlands Day, celebrates the integration of wetland conservation in urban planning—a major step toward sustainable urban development.

🐦 What Is the Ramsar Convention?

  • An international treaty signed in 1971, focused on wetland conservation and wise use.
  • Currently has 172 member countries.
  • Aims to ensure wetlands continue providing ecological, economic, and social benefits to communities.

🌆 Wetland City Accreditation: Global Standards for Local Stewardship

  • Recognises cities that demonstrate strong governance and commitment to protecting wetlands.
  • Requires meeting six international criteria, including:
    • Conservation action
    • Promotion of ecosystem services
    • Involvement of local communities
    • Sustainable urban policies
  • In 2024, 31 new cities joined the list, making the total 74 Wetland Cities worldwide.

🇮🇳 India’s Honoured Cities

Indore, Madhya Pradesh

  • Focused on the restoration of Sirpur Lake, now being developed as a bird sanctuary.
  • Integrated wetland protection into its urban waste and stormwater management systems.

Udaipur, Rajasthan

  • Famous for its lakes and palaces, Udaipur’s wetlands support:
    • Biodiversity
    • Climate regulation
    • Cultural and tourism-based livelihoods

⚖️ Bhopal Misses the Mark

  • Though nominated, Bhopal did not receive accreditation.
  • Citizen groups raised concerns over:
    • Infrastructure projects threatening wetlands
    • Inadequate public consultation
  • Highlights the importance of civic participation in environmental decisions.

🌿 Why Urban Wetlands Matter

  • Act as natural sponges, absorbing floodwaters.
  • Regulate urban microclimates.
  • Provide habitats for migratory birds and native species.
  • Offer spaces for recreation, tourism, and cultural events.

🛡️ What This Means for the Future

The accreditation of Indore and Udaipur sets a precedent for Indian cities to prioritize wetland conservation in urban planning. It also puts a spotlight on the power of policy, public awareness, and ecological stewardship in shaping healthier cities.
