On February 15, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM-Surya Ghar – Muft Bijli Yojana, aiming to provide free electricity to 1 crore households by harnessing the power of the sun. This ambitious initiative encourages rooftop solar adoption in the residential sector, backed by operational guidelines from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

🛠️ Two Innovative Implementation Models

1. RESCO Model(Renewable Energy Service Company)
   • Third-party investors install rooftop systems
   • Consumers pay only for electricity consumed
   • No upfront costs for households
2. Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) Model
   • DISCOMs or state agencies handle installations
   • Simplifies the process for consumers
   • Ensures quality control and service continuity

💸 Financial Support & Subsidies

• Central Financial Assistance (CFA):
  • ₹60,000 subsidy for 2 kW systems
  • ₹78,000 subsidy for 3 kW systems
  • CFA capped at 3 kW per household
• Payment Security Mechanism (PSM):
  • ₹100 crore fund created to reduce risk in the RESCO model
  • Additional grants may be approved by MNRE
• Loan Facilities:
  • Collateral-free, low-interest loans
  • Interest rate approx. 7%
  • Encourages easy financing for rooftop systems
