🚢 INS Utkarsh: A New Milestone in India’s Naval Self-Reliance

On the shores of Kattupalli, near Chennai, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) launched the Indian Navy’s second Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV)INS Utkarsh – marking another stride in India’s journey toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.

The launch came just three months after its predecessor, INS Samarthak, demonstrating L&T’s accelerated production capabilities and robust engineering infrastructure.


📏 Vessel Specifications – INS Utkarsh

  • Length: 107 metres
  • Width: 18.6 metres
  • Displacement: 3,750+ tonnes
  • Top Speed: 15 knots
  • Meaning of ‘Utkarsh’: Superior in Conduct (Hindi)

🛠️ Features & Operational Roles

INS Utkarsh is engineered for multi-domain operations, including:

  • Maritime surveillance & coastal patrolling
  • Humanitarian assistance & disaster relief (HADR)
  • Towing ships & recovering targets
  • Combatting marine pollution
  • Operating UAVs & autonomous underwater vehicles
  • Serving as a testbed for indigenous weapons and sensors

A ship that supports both combat missions and peace-time operations — a true multi-role marvel.


🧪 Built with Indigenous Expertise

  • Design: L&T’s in-house Warship Design Centre, Chennai
  • Construction: Kattupalli Shipyard, equipped with:
    • Ship-lift systems
    • Dry and wet berths
    • Facilities for concurrent building and repairs
