🛡️ Parliament Duty Group Merged into CRPF’s VIP Security Wing – Strengthening High-Level Protection
In January 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officially merged the Parliament Duty Group (PDG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) into the VIP Security Group (VSG).
This follows the PDG’s withdrawal from Parliament duty in May 2024, a decision driven by evolving security needs and structural reforms within India’s paramilitary apparatus.
🔁 Transition of Personnel
- The PDG, comprising 1,400 personnel, has been renamed and merged into the VSG
- This change was formalised via an MHA order on January 15, 2025
- PDG had already been disengaged from Parliament duty post a December 2023 breach
- Now integrated into a restructured and strengthened VSG
🛡️ One group, one mission — protect India’s leadership with renewed force.
🪖 New Battalion Joins VSG
- Battalion 190, previously posted in anti-Naxal operations in Jharkhand, has now joined the VSG
- Brings in 1,000+ trained personnel
- Focus: Strengthen VIP security operations nationwide
This move marks a strategic reallocation of seasoned CRPF personnel from active conflict zones to protective assignments.
👤 Expanded Responsibilities
- The VSG now safeguards over 200 high-profile individuals, including:
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah
- Gandhi family members
- Other key political leaders
- Total strength of VSG now exceeds 8,000 personnel
🏛️ Background – Security Breach in Parliament
- In December 2023, intruders managed to enter the Lok Sabha chamber
- The incident led to a nationwide review of Parliament’s internal security
- Resulted in:
- Withdrawal of the PDG
- Reform and reinforcement through the VSG
🫡 CRPF – Backbone of India’s Internal Security
- Founded: 1939
- Mandate:
- Public order
- Internal security
- Counter-terrorism
- Disaster response
- Known for:
- Adaptability
- Rapid deployment
- UN Peacekeeping missions
🧱 Part of a Larger Force Structure
The CRPF is one of several Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), alongside:
- Assam Rifles
- Border Security Force (BSF)
- Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
- Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
- National Security Guard (NSG)
- Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
Each plays a unique role in India’s multi-layered national security architecture.
🕯️ When walls are tested, we build stronger shields. The restructured VSG is one such shield — silent, vigilant, essential.
