🧹 Swachh Survekshan 2024 – A Cleaner India Through Community and Competition

In a step toward a cleaner, greener urban India, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar recently unveiled the toolkit for the 9th edition of Swachh Survekshan, the world’s largest cleanliness survey.
This edition features a simplified, citizen-focused framework and introduces the Super Swachh League — a recognition platform for cities consistently excelling in urban sanitation.

The new approach aims to empower citizens, enhance accountability, and foster healthy competition among municipalities.


🏙️ About Swachh Survekshan

  • Launched: 2016 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA)
  • Objective: Improve urban sanitation through:
    • Citizen engagement
    • Municipal reform
    • Transparent assessments
  • Evaluates cities based on:
    • Waste management
    • Sanitation services
    • Community participation
    • Third-party verification

Swachh Survekshan has transformed cleanliness from policy into a movement.


🏆 Introducing the Super Swachh League

A new competitive category — the Super Swachh League — honours cities that have:

  • Ranked in the Top 3 for at least two of the past three years (2021–2023)
  • Proven consistency in excellence
  • Inspired systemic and cultural change in urban sanitation

🏅 Cities in the Super Swachh League (by Category)

Very Small Cities (<20,000 population):

  • 🌿 Panchgani
  • 🧱 Patan

Small Cities (20,000–50,000 population):

  • 🌸 Vita
  • 🌼 Sasvad

Medium Cities (50,000–3 lakh population):

  • 🌳 Ambikapur
  • 🛕 Tirupati
  • 🏛️ NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council)

Big Cities (3–10 lakh population):

  • 🏙️ Noida
  • 🏞️ Chandigarh

Million-Plus Cities (>10 lakh population):

  • 🌆 Navi Mumbai
  • 🏙️ Indore
  • 🌉 Surat

Each city will be assessed using category-specific criteria, tailored to its population size and urban profile.


📋 Assessment Criteria

  • Cities must maintain a minimum 85% score to stay in the league.
  • Additional aspirational indicators will encourage innovation and sustainable practices.
  • Focus areas:
    • Citizen feedback
    • Segregation at source
    • Digital monitoring
    • Beautification and greenery
