Spike in Guillain-Barré Syndrome Cases Reported in Pune: Health Authorities Investigate

A sudden rise in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune has raised concerns, with 59 individuals diagnosed in recent weeks, 12 of whom required ventilator support. The Maharashtra Health Department has launched an investigation to determine the underlying factors. While GBS is not contagious, experts stress the importance of early detection and prompt medical attention.

🔍 What Is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves.
This can lead to:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Severe cases of paralysis

Though the exact cause is unknown, GBS often follows respiratory or gastrointestinal infections.

🔬 Types of GBS

  • Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP):
Most common in North America and Europe.
  • Miller Fisher Syndrome (MFS):
A rare variant involving eye muscle paralysis and coordination problems.
  • Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy (AMAN):
Seen more frequently in regions like China and Japan, affecting motor nerves.

🧠 Symptoms and Progression

  • Initial signs: Tingling and weakness in legs or feet
  • Progression: Spreading weakness, facial paralysis, difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Severe cases: Require ventilator support, as seen in Pune

🦠 Common Triggers and Infections

Around two-thirds of GBS cases are reported after infections, such as:

  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Stomach viruses
  • Emerging associations: COVID-19 and Zika virus infections

GBS can affect any age group, but is more common in adults.

💉 Treatment and Recovery

While there is no cure, effective treatments include:

  • Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG)
  • Plasmapheresis (plasma exchange)

These therapies block harmful antibodies and speed up recovery.
Recovery is often slow but complete, ranging from weeks to months, and in some cases, years.

🏥 Public Health Response in Pune

  • The recent increase has triggered investigations into possible common triggers.
  • Authorities are emphasizing public awareness, early diagnosis, and timely intervention.

Though not indicative of an outbreak, the cluster of GBS cases highlights the need for vigilance in neurological health surveillance.
