009. Supercritical Surge – Chhattisgarh Powers Up with Cleaner Heat ⚙️
Energy, Environment, Infrastructure, Science & Tech
By IAS Monk / April 3, 2025

🔥 What’s Happening?
- CSPGCL’s Supercritical Thermal Power Project (SCTPP)
- Location: Korba, Chhattisgarh
- Investment: ₹15,800 crore
- Capacity Addition: 1,320 Mw to existing 1,340 Mw
- Laid by: PM Modi on March 30, 2025
- Part of: Hasdeo Thermal Power Station expansion
⚗️ What is Supercritical Thermal Power?
- Supercritical = Operating above 22.1 MPa pressure & 374°C temperature
- Water becomes a single-phase fluid, neither liquid nor steam
- Result = Higher thermal efficiency, less fuel, less pollution
🔁 How It Works
- Water pumped → heated → turns into supercritical fluid
- Fuel (usually coal) combusted
- Fluid drives turbine → electricity generated
- Reheating & regeneration further improve output
⚡ Why It Matters
Benefit | Impact |
---|---|
More Efficiency | ~10% gain over subcritical units |
Lower Emissions | Reduces CO₂ and SO₂ output |
Compact Design | Smaller footprint, modular units |
Better Reliability | Advanced sensors & control |
🌍 Environmental & Energy Outlook
- Supercritical tech = cleaner coal bridge before renewables take over
- India’s growing demand needs transition tools
- SCTPP in Korba is part of national energy mix strategy
📚 Relevance for UPSC
- GS3: Energy, Technology, Environment
- Essay: “Efficiency is not the end of energy—it’s the beginning of wisdom.”
✨ Closing Whisper
“The furnace burns no less—but now it thinks.
And every drop of water becomes a whisper of change.”
🔥 A Thought Spark – by IAS Monk
If coal must burn,
Let it burn with less guilt,
More wisdom,
And fewer scars on the sky.
