📘 Q.6 IAS Prelims 2023 — Environment & Ecology (Mushrooms & Their Properties)🧷 Authentic Classroom Explanation by IAS Monk
📌 The Question
Consider the following statements:
- Some mushrooms have medicinal properties.
- Some mushrooms have psychoactive properties.
- Some mushrooms have insecticidal properties.
- Some mushrooms have bioluminescent properties.
How many of the above statements are correct?
(a) Only one
(b) Only two
(c) Only three
(d) All four
✅ Correct Answer: (d) All four
🧑🏫 Classroom Explanation
✔️ Statement 1 – Correct (Medicinal mushrooms)
Certain mushrooms such as Pleurotus (oyster mushrooms), Ganoderma (Reishi) and Lentinula edodes (Shiitake) possess immunomodulatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic and antioxidant properties. They are widely studied in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical research.
✔️ Statement 2 – Correct (Psychoactive mushrooms)
Psilocybin mushrooms, commonly called magic mushrooms, contain psychoactive compounds like psilocybin and psilocin, which cause hallucinations and altered perception. These are classified as psychedelic substances.
✔️ Statement 3 – Correct (Insecticidal properties)
Certain mushroom species produce toxic secondary metabolites that act as natural insecticides, helping them defend against insect predation. Species of Lactarius and other fungi show such traits.
✔️ Statement 4 – Correct (Bioluminescent mushrooms)
Some mushrooms emit light due to luciferin–luciferase reactions, a phenomenon called fungal bioluminescence. Examples include Mycena, Armillaria, and Omphalotus. This glow may help attract insects for spore dispersal.

Did you know?
🌌 Forests with glowing mushrooms are called “ghost forests” — nature’s own silent light show.
📚 Enrich Notes (UPSC Edge)
- Mushrooms belong to Kingdom Fungi, not plants
- Key roles:
- Decomposers
- Medicinal resource
- Ecological indicators
- Bioluminescence ≠ photosynthesis
- Repeatedly asked in Environment + S&T overlap
